“He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.” (Colossians 1:28)
Today we’re going to breakdown this verse using a technique from EMAW (Every Man A Warrior). To do this we look at each of the main words in the verse and try to gain a deeper understanding by substituting the words definition. Starting with the word “proclaim,” we see that Paul is referring to Jesus and stating that we are to announce or declare publicly the characteristics of our Savior. It is always God [Jesus] who is to be the focus. We as the ones making the declarations are never to get in the way of the true message. The message that our “wisdom”, or experience, knowledge, and good judgment is achieved by devoting our lives to Jesus. We are to pass on, show, and explain this message (i.e. teach) to everyone. Not the ones who listen, or the ones who will receive it well; Paul specifically uses the word everyone (no exceptions). As for the admonishing, we see this as the hard truth that with the teaching also comes accountability. There is an implied warning, and reprimand at times, that comes along with the saving grace of Jesus. God will be with those who are with Him. Which is as much of a faithful promise as it is a warning. Lastly comes the reason for doing all of this. So that everyone (there is that all-inclusive word again) can mature in Christ Jesus. Oxford Languages has this very good meaning for the word mature, “having reached the most advanced stage in a process.” Paul is saying that our goal is for “everyone” to come to the most advanced knowledge and relationship with the God that saves. So there you have it; we are to publicly declare Christ Jesus – explaining all that He has done, with a firm warning (on eternity) – and guide everyone to the saving faith and good news of the gospel. And there’s your verse breakdown EMAW style.
