“Josiah celebrated the Passover to the Lord in Jerusalem, and the Passover lamb was slaughtered on the fourteenth day of the first month.” (2 Chronicles 35:1)
There were two questions asked this past Sunday, one during Sunday school and the other in Pastor Tanner’s sermon. They were “What are we celebrating?” and “who do you live for?” Each question could easily be a full nugget by themselves, but with both being asked on the same Sunday, I thought there was a bit of divine inspiration going on that I dare not change. So here we are with two questions to consider. Noting that it is 2024 – we no longer have all the Old Testament celebrations, as in today’s verse, but we certainly do observe other holidays. However, these questions are wanting us to dig in deeper than just list out a years’ worth of birthdays, anniversaries, and the like. They are geared toward uncovering our true motives and currency in life. When asked “who do we live for?” it’s a piercing question meant to identify the things we seek and the things that motivate us. All with the undertone of the correct answer in mind – which is Christ Jesus. Now consider what it may look like if Jesus was your answer to “what we celebrate,” or “who do we live for?” When Jesus is the answer, we make the things of this world secondary. We look to our Heavenly Father for our motivation. And Jesus, who has opened the door of salvation to us all, becomes our singular currency. I pray that Jesus is the answer to these questions for us all. Yet just yesterday I became so frustrated with worldly concerns that I displayed everything but a Christ-like behavior. I say this because if I were thinking about these questions during that time, the outcome would have been altogether different. So today, remember that these questions hold power. Power to change our decisions, and our lives. Because when the answer is Jesus, there is no greater power than Him.
