“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” (James 3:13)
This past Sunday, Pastor Tanner started his sermon by referencing the well-known phrase, “Actions speak louder than words.” A phrase that James, the author of today’s verse, would definitely subscribe to; as is evident by his other notable verses like “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” – James 2:17. The idea of “deeds not words” is a central theme throughout the book of James. And in today’s verse, James narrows in on the concept that true wisdom will be accompanied by true and righteous actions. Noting that a natural byproduct of wisdom is the ability to make good decisions. Moreover, good decisions will naturally lead to a “good life.” A good life that is not only holy and righteous but also humble. Which James states [humility] as another natural outcome that comes from wisdom. So in all, his claim is rather straightforward. Those who are wise will live a humble and good life. Now being familiar with the entirety of James makes this an obvious point, but for the sake of completeness, we should clarify the definition of wisdom in this context. From James’ perspective, wisdom comes from God, and defines the truth. So indeed James would agree that to be wise is to have saving faith in Christ Jesus. Yet, he further believes that having faith should be observable (or somehow measurable) by the way you live. Hence, his stance that faith without action is dead. So today, think about James’ definition of wisdom and remember, “Actions speak louder than words.”
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder.” – James 2:18-19
