“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
“O be careful little eyes what you see; O be careful little ears what you hear; O be careful little tongue what you say; O be careful little hands what you do; O be careful little feet where you go; O be careful little heart whom you trust; O be careful little mind what you think” – From: O Be Careful, Little Eyes, Song by Cedarmont Kids
Jesus has said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 18:3. He was specifically speaking about taking a lowly and humble position within society in that verse. But we know that having “childlike” faith was something that Jesus encouraged. In today’s verse from Proverbs, we can also find childlike examples to mimic. Looking at the main lyrics from “O Be Careful, Little Eyes” we can relate an ever import message back to a very simple children’s song. Be careful what you see, hear, say, and do. Be careful where you go, who you trust, and what you think. These are truly valuable life lessons that fall directly inline with Proverbs 4:23. We need to guard our heart, knowing that the heart represents all we are, all we see, hear, do… As the song goes, we need to be diligent in protecting ourselves from the sinful temptations of this world. Every step we take, and around every corner, lies another temptation waiting to feed on our soul. Guarding ourselves from what we consume is the only way to keep these temptations, and the sin they lead to, away. But being careful, or guarding oneself, is an active task. Meaning that “to guard” is an action. It just doesn’t happen by itself. So today, be purposeful in protecting yourself from sin. Take an active approach to avoiding temptation and be careful what you allow yourself to consume.
