“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,” (Ephesians 3:16)
This past Sunday at church, our Sunday School went over an excerpt from Psalm 62. Describing how many psalms were put to song and prayers, reflecting not only the current feelings of the psalmist but also all who sing along. Also noting that some Psalms are lamenting on the hardship of living in a sinful fallen world, while other psalms were an outward expression of joy and thanksgiving. But as we talked about Psalm 62, this particular psalm “was neither a lament nor a thanksgiving hymn” – NIV standard Lesson Quarterly. Instead, Psalm 62 combined the aspects of lamenting and thanksgiving to form a true song of confidence. Confidence in that we trust God because He is willing and able to save us. The psalm boasts about God’s power. The only true and ultimate power in existence. The power that saves. God’s combined love, grace, and mercy for us has been exemplified through Christ Jesus. In Today’s verse, the apostle Paul calls on the Lord and prays that all believers may experience God’s power (love, grace, mercy, protection, peace…) firsthand. Paul’s prayer in this verse is that God may cast His light on us and completely strengthen us “through His Spirit.” As in David’s psalm, we too should have the confidence that God is there for us when no one else seems to be. He is the stable rock in the middle of the storm. God created all that we see; He can set wet wood on fire, stop a river, walk on water, calm the winds. This is the God of “glorious riches” that Paul prays to strengthen us. And He will! Today, follow suit with Paul and ask for God’s strength to be upon us. And have the confidence to know that He will save us.
