“This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” (John 21:24-25)
This past Monday I was picking up our youngest at bible study and got there at bit early. While waiting, I could hear the end of the adult class from the lobby. I caught the speaker’s commentary on the last two verses of John, which will be the focus for this nugget. I was really moved by the speaker and will try to summarize his thoughts below.
First; John tells his readers that it is he who wrote this gospel and testifies to its accuracy. John leaves no room for interpretation. He experienced and witnessed these things about Jesus in person, with Him [Jesus], and explicitly tells us this fact. John removes the idea that some form of “whisper down the lane” or other generational liberties have distorted his gospel. John was there, an eye witness, with Jesus and the disciples and he testifies to its validity.
Next, John puts out the caveat that while what he wrote was true, it was not a complete account of all that had occurred. This would make sense seeing that John most likely spent a few years with Jesus. But what does this statement mean to us today? Simply put, John tells us that there is more to know about Jesus. In other words, reading the gospel of John doesn’t complete our journey to knowing Christ – it is just the beginning. In fact, John supposes that there would not be enough room in the entire world to complete the biography on Jesus. And even if there were that many books detailing Christ’s life, it would take many lifetimes to read them all. So the point is this, we may never know God completely and we should never stop the search.
