“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:25-26)
Returning to our happy place. I imagine that I’m not alone when I say that there are certain experiences that return me (at least mentally) to a place or time when things were good. Sometimes it’s a song or scene from a movie that brings me back to simpler times. Or a particular food, and sometimes just the way a meal had been prepared, that instantly places me back in my grandparent’s kitchen. For some, it might be a particular place or event that warms you with comfort as your mind fast forwards through years of memories shared at that location. No matter if it’s a sound or music, a particular scent, or a special place to visit, we probably all know what it’s like to be returned to your “happy place.”
Today’s verse from the psalmist, gives us a renewed perspective on what it takes to return to a place of joy and comfort. This psalm says that through God and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ we are already there. We already have all that we need and everything we could ever want. This world has nothing that to be desired, for everything is found in Heaven – Where the one true God is. For God provides us not only comfort in this fallen world, but also the strength to live in it. Christ Jesus dwells within our hearts. The single organ that pumps life through are veins and arteries each second of our life. God wants to be our all-in-all and has created us such that He is our everything. So when sin and the troubles of this world come knocking, return to your happy place. Not by seeking things and memories of the past, but by focusing on Christ Jesus who lives in you today.
