“Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.” (Philippians 3:17)
There are many scripture references that are analogous to what we call the spiritual mirror. Like a regular mirror, the spiritual mirror will reflect how you are seen, but on the inside. A close examination of the spiritual mirror will show all the things that you do that are good and in-line with godly living, but it will also expose the dark spots in our lives. I believe it’s healthy to think about this idea of a spiritual mirror, and even more beneficial to examine one’s self often enough to remain honest with where we need improvement. Recognizing that we all sin, and leaving it at that, is not enough. But some sins are harder than others to give up. Some sins are so engrained into our lives that it’s hard to imagine (or try) to remove them. To use a sports analogy, this is where you have to rely on the team. Conquering sin may often require a group effort, fellow Christians to walk beside and lean on when your own “legs” are too weak.
This is where today’s verse becomes so very important. Paul urges his brothers and sisters in Christ to join forces and follow the example of those who are doing their absolute best to live a holy and sanctified life. Find those who are modeling Christ Jesus in all that they do and latch onto them for support. In doing this, we can use those who model Christ Jesus, the scripture, and all that is expected of us as Christians, as the basis to remain grounded. At times, who we follow is just as important as who we are ourselves. Because eventually those that you follow will be the most likely people you emulate. So today, use the godly wisdom that He has provided. Examine yourself thoroughly, and find a group of believers – who are focused on Jesus – to be with in fellowship.
