“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” (2 Peter 1:3-4)
“The power to grow doesn’t come from within us, but from God. Because we don’t have the resources to be truly godly, God allows us to ‘participate in the divine nature’ in order to keep us from sin and help us live for him. When we are born again, God by the Spirit empowers us with his own moral goodness.” – Zondervan, NIV Life Application Study Bible
It’s a great feeling when you think you have everything you need. But today’s scripture gets us to think about where the “everything” comes from – and that is God. Through His divine power, God has blessed us and provided all we require to follow Him and live a godly life. We didn’t earn this gift, it was granted to us freely. And through this gift, which is also a promise from our Heavenly Father, we have all that He has given us which is all that we need. And as the commentary states, none of the results of God’s gifts are ours alone, rather they are reflections of God’s power and authority in our lives, in our actions, and through our words. God allows us to “participate” in the divine godly living because He is loving and merciful. Today, be thankful for God’s gifts and the fruit we were able to produce with them. But be mindful that our successes are not completely of our own labor, but of God’s allowance to “participate [and take part in His] divine nature.”
