“But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.” (Galatians 6:4 NKJV)
In today’s verse Paul is reiterating a very simple truth, we are all judged on our own actions. While this may not be a universal truth in society, in God’s eyes we will be held accountable for our own actions. Meaning that God is not interested in the “but he started it, or that guy cut me off” argument. We all have been granted free will and we all need to take responsibility for the choices we make with that God given freedom. So the examination being referenced in the verse is of ourselves and by ourselves. We are to look at our own work, and not in comparison to others but in comparison to God’s word and will for our lives.
“Your effectiveness for the Lord never depends on your sense of adequacy or record of success.
God can use your failures as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block.”
(John’s Gospel- The Truth Bible Study Fellowship- lesson 28).
We all have a great deal to offer with value to be added, and we all will also make mistakes and sin. The overall assessment of our work is the result of our self-examination. And these results lead to refinement and progress. Using experience to say we will not make that mistake again, which ultimately leads to the rejoicing. And not because we feel or have done better than someone else but because of our own actions. “The only person you should try to be better than is who you were yesterday.” – Anonymous
