“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:13)
Today’s verse applies a bit of what I would call biblical logic to our understanding of God. First we are to see that God has no middle ground as He is perfectly holy. As such, He will see sin in our lives or not (no in between), and since we all sin – we all make these (even if small) purposeful steps away from God – meaning we distance ourselves from His perfect and holy nature – and so the phrase “though you are evil” applies. Now the intent of using the category evil to describe us is not to make ourselves feel bad or rejected, but to just simply state the fact that we all sin. And with that topic noted, we move into both the good news and the biblical logic that points back to our merciful and loving Heavenly Father. In spite of our fall to sin, we still care for our young. We still parent our children with their best interests in mind and often put them first above any of our own personal needs. We love our children deeply, even though we struggle with our own sin. Now taking this knowledge and comparing it to God is the logic Jesus uses to teach us about how much more God can love and care for us (as His children). Our faults will never allow us to be perfect, yet we do all these things right for our children. So then, if we know and understand how much we do – how much more and greater will God do. The logic is simple, we accomplish good things even though we sin. So God can accomplish ever greater things because He has no sin. We accomplish good for our children even though we are not perfect. So today remember that God loves you perfectly.
