“[When Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, the people rejected his teaching, and] they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, ‘When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?’” – John 7:30-31 (From https://www.verseoftheday.com/ )
Jesus disappeared because His time had not come yet. God’s plan was not fully in place, and so the human attempts to end Jesus was thwarted by a higher divine power. God had architected a design to save creation, and He was going to ensure that it would be carried out. Jesus’ mission on earth was clear: define the gospel message, teach it to His disciples, and then fulfil it through the crucifixion and resurrection. And to do this the blocks had to be placed exactly as God had intended, to include the time of Christ Jesus’ betrayal and death. But the most interesting part of this biblical account is the last quotation given at the end of verse 31. “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?” The reason this is so intriguing is to think about the people in the crowd who would have been saying this. First of all, they were not the religious elite, because these were the people trying to kill Jesus. They were not the leaders of the community because following Jesus openly would instantly destroy their status. This leaves the regular townspeople being the likely ones to make the connection between Jesus and the Messiah. You see, the people who had no other agendas saw Jesus for exactly who He was. They said, who else could do the things that Jesus could. In their minds it was all quite simple and perfectly logical. With no other biases to confuse what they witnessed, it left only one reasonable conclusion. Jesus was the Messiah. Today let us all continue to see Christ Jesus for exactly who He is – God with us.
