“For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24)
Rabbits are certainly cute and fun to watch, but I have to call to question their capacity to make good decisions. I’ll take a moment to explain. Almost every year, around this time, we have a mama bunny make a nest for her tiny baby bunny liter in our backyard. Now at first glance this seems like a wise choice. We have a fenced in back yard with a few trees, and from the rabbits perspective this probably seems quite secluded. She picks a good spot in the back corner of the yard, which I imagine provides a comforting feeling of security. Other animals and likely predators are kept out by the fence and it’s far enough from the house where there’s not regular traffic from the kids playing. All things considered this should be a very good and wise selection by this mama bunny. All except for one thing, (actually two things) our two 70+ pound dogs. You see the reason we got the fence was not to keep other animals out of the yard, but to keep our dogs in the yard. Now we don’t leave the dogs out all day. But they’re certainly outside long enough, (I thought) for a bunny to see that all the great advantages of this corner spot should be outweighed by the presence of two large dogs. Nonetheless, almost every year we find a new nest. So as I joke about this mama’s questionable decision on the placement of her nest, I think about all the times we (as much wiser species) are also fooled by the promise of something that seems safe and good. Scripture warns of all forms of trickery and falsehood, used by the evil one to lead us astray. At times, these false prophets will use incredible works to secure our trust. Today, may none of us fall for the illusion of safety; but maintain our focus on the true God that saves.
