“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
Well yesterday we were told that a bad software update caused wide spread outages on computers systems that run the Microsoft Windows Operating System. There were reports world wide of delays at airports, effects on banks, and some other critical infrastructure. All experiencing computer issues that literally brought the productivity and normal operation of certain companies to a halt. As a society, we have come to rely, so heavily, on computers that this day has been in the making for years. Now I’m not going to stomp my feet and call for the destruction of all computers dooms-day rhetoric, but the results of yesterday was quite telling. Our reliance on computers in the home and on the job is very much all-encompassing. But the good news out of all of this, is that wide spread failures like we saw yesterday will spawn new levels of protection and it will also tend to infuse new funding into creating redundancies and fail safes. So all is not lost. Nonetheless, the situation still made me think about how much I personally rely on computers, and how much of my own life would be effected if all my computing resources failed at the same time. (Not good). It was a little scary to think about. Which leads us to today’s verse from Isaiah. God is reassuring us that He is the one we should be relying on. We are not to fear because God is Emmanuel (God with us). Our God is the true all-in-all, He can provide true strength and security because He is both with us, and He is God. So today remember that computers may have a huge footprint in our lives. But it is in God that we should place our trust.
