I love Chinese food. In spite of my Italian heritage I often wonder if4 Chinese food is actually my favorite. The best part of ordering Chinese food is just going down the list and picking all your favorites, knowing that there will be plenty of leftovers for the next day (or around 11:30 at night while typing the nuggetJ) Seriously though, when you are hungry and can’t put your finger on want you want, you simply get a pint of this, a quart of that, add some rice, and that’s it – a perfect meal. Of course not forgetting about the egg rolls. But what does my odd obsession with ordering Chinese food have to do with today’s verse? Well, I think we have all herd the saying “It’s like ordering from a Chinese menu.” It’s a saying that refers to the notion that you can pick and choose what you like. And the relevance back to today’s scripture verse is that Paul says absolutely the opposite about God’s word. Unlike the Chinese menu concept, where you choose the best options based on your own taste, Paul says that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for…” Meaning that the bible exists as a single and complete book. You can’t add to it what you think is missing, and you can’t discount the books or verses that say things you may disagree with. The Bible stands by itself, the Word of God – no additions or subtractions can be made. All scripture, which is the entire bible, with no exceptions is useful. So when you come across a difficult or hard verse, remember Paul’s words to Timothy. You can’t just put it to the side, and “order more rice instead.” The Bible is our only source of the inspired word of God. Don’t pick through it like a Chinese menu.
