“Now when the Lord spoke to Moses in Egypt, he said to him, ‘I am the Lord. Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you.’ But Moses said to the Lord, ‘Since I speak with faltering lips, why would Pharaoh listen to me?’” (Exodus 6:28-30)
Moses escaped death as a child by being put in a basket and floated down a river. In spite of this, he was still nursed by his actual mother. He was then handed over to Pharaoh’s daughter to be raised with the best Egypt had to offer. And later in life, he experienced God’s presence in a burning bush. God told Moses to go see “Pharaoh and bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” And to all of this, Moses’ response was kind of like “God, maybe you got the wrong guy.” He realized that God has chosen him for something great – and the only thing he could think of was that he can’t speak well enough. Reading this we wonder “Moses what were you thinking, God will enable you.” But if I’m being honest with myself, how many times has this been my first response to God’s calling too? How many times have I personally witnessed something and felt that nudge to get involved and thought “Oh surely God has someone better in mind for that.” Taking the full personality and situation of Moses as an example, how often do we all squash the whispers of the Holy Spirit as God speaks to us? Could it be true that we too have issued our own version of “why would Pharaoh listen to me” to God? In the case of Moses, God ultimately provided Aaron to speak for Moses. But in our lives God will also provide and enable us to accomplish the tasks needed to answer His call. Today God may be calling you to do something that you don’t think you can do. Just know that if you say you can’t, the call doesn’t go away, you may just have an “Aaron” on his way to meet you.
