“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)
Paul’s exhortation to “walk by the Spirit” in Galatians 5:16 is a call to live in accordance with God’s guidance and strength, rather than succumbing to our own sinful inclinations. This verse underscores the dichotomy between living a life led by the Spirit and one dominated by the desires of the flesh. When Paul speaks of the “flesh,” he refers to our fallen human nature, prone to selfish desires and actions that separate us from God.
To “walk by the Spirit” means to yield to the Holy Spirit’s influence in every aspect of our lives. It involves a daily commitment to seek God’s will, to listen for His voice, and to align our actions, thoughts, and emotions with the teachings of Christ. The Spirit empowers us to overcome temptations and to bear the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Paul’s message is both a promise and a command. The promise is that if we walk by the Spirit, we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. This is a reassurance that the Spirit’s power is sufficient to conquer our sinful tendencies. The command is to actively pursue this walk, to make conscious choices that reflect our faith and trust in God’s provision. The more we rely on the Spirit, the more we will see our lives transformed into the likeness of Christ.
So today, let us focus on the importance of spiritual discipline and the incredible gift of the Holy Spirit, who guides, sustains, and empowers us to live a life pleasing to God. May we walk in the Spirit, and embrace our identity as children of God, experiencing the fullness of the life that Jesus promised.
