“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:14-16)
My process for the nugget every day is pretty straight forward. I have three websites that post a daily verse. I read them all and decide which to use. I visit biblegateway.com and look at the entire chapter to get any context from the scripture surrounding the selected verse. Then I go to my study bible and check out the commentary on the verse. And when I have all that information in my mind, I do the most important step in my process. I wait, staring at the wall in my office, and ask God to please give me something to write regarding all that I just read. Sometimes, like last night, I believe that God told me that the commentary was too spot on to paraphrase or change in any way. And I hope you agree.
So today’s nugget comes straight from my Life Application Study Bible commentary. “Holy in everything we do. Holiness means being totally devoted or dedicated to God, set aside for His special use and set apart from sin and its influence. We’re to be set apart and different, not blending in with the crowd, yet not being different just for the sake of being different. What makes us different are God’s qualities in our lives. Our focus and priorities must be His. All this is in direct contrast to our old ways. We cannot become holy on our own, but God gives us His Holy Spirit to help us obey and to give us power to overcome sin. Don’t use the excuse that you can’t help slipping into sin. Call on God’s power to free you from sin’s grip.” – Zondervan, NIV Life Application Study Bible
