“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)
Well today my wife established clear evidence that we do have a mouse in the garage (somewhere). Obviously not the end of the world, as these things happen, but not something one wants to deal with. So, I had to chuckle a bit when I saw biblegateway’s verse mentioning “moths and vermin.” It’s probably not something we think a lot about, but I suppose given the nature of living in those days, moths and vermin were most likely a large problem. And the fact that we have a mouse in our garage now (in the year 2025) is just another example of the timeless nature of the bible. Joking aside, the fact that “vermin” still can enter our homes as unwanted guests – that theft still occurs – fires can still ruin all that we saved – these facts just further substantiate Jesus’ claim that all our financial and materialistic items are temporary. More so than being temporary, they can be taken or ruined in an instant. So, Jesus is essentially asking, “why do it?” Why make your treasures be things of this world, when we have an eternal treasure in our Lord Christ Jesus. Then Jesus leaves us with this warning, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” He is saying that when your treasures are of this world, then that is where your focus is too. As humans, we spend most of our time chasing what is important to us. Jesus is arguing how much better our lives will be if instead we focus our time and energy on chasing Him. So today, may we all plan accordingly for the future, but with our hearts on the true treasure – Jesus.
