“The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.” (Zechariah 14:9)
This verse follows the prediction that Jerusalem will indeed fall. “A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls” – Zechariah 14:1. But after this prediction is given in verse 1 of the chapter, Zechariah declares the next phase of God’s plan where God will stand for Jerusalem again “Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations…” – Zechariah 14:4. Today’s nugget verse is then given as a part of the description of the “Day” where the Lord God will fight and win the battle on Israel’s behalf. But we can also see the prophetic message of Christ’s return in this verse, where the bible tells us to expect each part of today’s verse to also be true on that day (the day of Judgement). When Jesus, the Morning Star, returns to the world scene He will be visible to all and all will know that Jesus is “Lord and King over the whole earth.”
The world will see that all other gods are false, all other endeavors that people put their faith and hope into are also false. The world will see that Jesus is the only way to the Father. On the day of Christ Jesus’ return, there will be only one true God and it will be known to all. And lastly, on the day of Jesus’ return the name of Christ Jesus will hold the power and glory to all on earth. As believers we know that the name of Jesus holds power today, but on that day of reckoning all will know the name of Jesus. “And His name [will be] the only name.”
