“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
“A person may be carrying heavy burdens of (1) sin, (2) excessive demands of religious leaders, (3) oppression and persecution, or (4) weariness in the search for God. Jesus frees people from all these burdens. The rest that Jesus promises is love, healing and peace with God, not the end of all labor. A relationship with God changes meaningless, wearisome toil into spiritual productivity and purpose.” – From the Zondervan, NIV Life Application Study Bible.
In today’s verses recorded in Matthew, Jesus proclaimed His desire for us. For us to come to Him and find the peace and spiritual rest that only He can offer. Christ Jesus is reaching out to all of us; those who are strong in faith, those who are still searching, and those who don’t know Him at all. The call is from our maker, the creator of all life, the one who knows us as the global human kind as well as each one of us personally. Jesus, being that He once walked in our flesh, understands the burden that sin has laid on us and calls us to rest in Him. And for this rest, this peace of mind and spirit, Jesus asks for only one thing from us – our faith to be put in Him. That is why His burden is light. There are no rules greater than to “love your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind”. May we all hear Jesus’ calling, “come to me,” and answer the call.
