“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
Yesterday was Christmas, a great reminder that the child was born already. Christ Jesus walked this earth, started a ministry with twelve handpicked disciples, fulfilled God’s plan by dying on a cross and rising on the third day, and is now with the Father in heaven awaiting the time of His return. Christmas is a reminder that all these things have occurred and that God’s word will never fail. From today’s verse in Isaiah, we also read that Jesus, who is God, is also the “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, [and] Prince of Peace.” Jesus was prophesied about in Isaiah’s time, He fulfilled the prophesies in His own time, and now the Wonderful Counselor is an advocate for us to the Father in our time. So yes, Christmas is a celebration of something that happen in the past. But each day we live is an opportunity to celebrate who Christ Jesus is in the present. He is our Mighty God, willing to take on our troubles. Our Counselor, ready to listen to our prayers and intercede on our behalf. And our God is the Everlasting Father who created everything from nothing and remains the only true path to peace. Yesterday was Christmas, but the celebration continues because our unchanging God is still very much everything scripture says He is.
