“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
Throughout the bible, Jesus has been called many names, with today’s verse giving us four to consider. What I love about the names of Jesus is that each name both perfectly describes Him (as best as our words ever could) and speaks to the unlimited ways that God loves us. Using the examples from today’s verse, we can say the following. When we have allowed doubt and sin into our lives, God doesn’t abandon us, rather He shows His true compassion and mercy for us, becoming our wise and all knowledgeable Wonderful Counselor. When hardship comes our way, and we start to feel that there is no where to escape it, we see Jesus as the one and true Mighty God. He was present at creation and is at the right hand of the Father now, there is nothing that can overwhelm Christ Jesus. He saves us through His strength. As mentioned, Jesus is indeed timeless. Like God the Father, Jesus too, has no beginning and no end. We can confide in Christ Jesus because He is everlasting. Jesus always existed and will continue to do so for eternity. We can count on Him as an everlasting Father. Lastly, when the storms of life rage, Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He has the power to calm the storms and quiet the winds. There is nothing outside of His authority. Even spiritual warfare will cease at the time of God’s choosing, bringing a perpetual quietness to the evil one’s countless lies and temptations. So, as we continue to prepare ourselves for Christmas, remember that this prophecy has already been fulfilled. Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor; Jesus is Mighty God; Jesus is our Everlasting Father; and Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Amen!
