“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23-24)
This week my family and I were fortunate enough to get away for a much needed vacation. And in spite of my best efforts, my mind always retreats to this fantasy of living the vacation life all year round. Maybe some of you have shared in this dream world of winning the lottery and never working another day in your life. Having no work commitments, the time to finish personal projects, and the sense of “owning” your own day. Now seeing that I don’t actually play the lottery, or have some lucrative side income, these thoughts really are just a sweet dream. But yesterday biblegateway had this nugget worthy verse from Colossians chapter 3. Focusing on the point that while not working anymore is fun to think about, we are still called to treat our occupations as another way to worship our creator. God has gifted us each with something unique to share. And Paul states that our work, and our attitude towards work, should be given our all-in-all. Even when your current job doesn’t make the best use of your God given skills, it (arguably more so) serves as a work of adoration to our Savior. Of course, we work for a pay check, but Paul says this is natural and our earthly bosses owes a day’s wages for a day of work. But our true inheritance is from Jesus looking towards eternity. And this inheritance, the gift Jesus paid for us, should translate into an attitude consistent with one who received the world but didn’t deserve any of it. So today, “work at it with all your heart, as [if] working for the Lord.” Our work, and our jobs are just another way to worship.
