“When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’ Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.’” (John 6:25-27)
In today’s verses, the crowds that had been following Jesus were searching for Him. (This occurred after Jesus had fed the Five Thousand.) When the crowd found Jesus they asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” because they were unable to find Him until this time. Jesus’ response to this question is the focus of today’s nugget. Jesus, as He typical did, used this simple question to have a teachable moment. Basically, He responded by saying “yes you found me, but why were you looking for me in the first place?” You see, Jesus knew the true motives of the people. He knew that they were searching for Him, not to gain a better understanding of His teaching, but because they were hungry. Their bodies where needing nourishment but it was their souls that Christ wanted to feed. I feel that in many ways, we too seek out Jesus for reasons that miss the point. I know that too often in my own prayer life, I seek out Jesus only to pray for intercession on the temporal things in life; House issues, car problems… And just like Jesus’ response to the crowd, I feel as if God is asking “what is your real desire here?” Verses like todays remind me that our perspective can sometimes be near sighted. We see the issues in front of us, and want them fixed, but God is wanting us to pray bigger. God wants to feed our soul. He wants to give us the “food that endures to eternal life.”
