“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:5-6)
There are many different ways to spread God’s word. But what works best? How do we know the “right” way to share the good news of the gospel? Well I’m careful to state that I am no authority on the topic, but I do think we can all take a page out of the Apostle Paul’s playbook. Today’s verse speaks to the approach one should take when interacting with others – specifically the “outsiders” and non-believers. First we see the most important point which is to take advantage of every opportunity. Far too often this is where I fall short. So speaking to myself more than anything else, we need to capture and make use of every opportunity to pass onto others the gift of life through faith in Christ Jesus. This is the single most important thing we can do. Next we see that to make a case for the gracious God in Heaven, we too need to approach the subject with grace. Human nature is not fond of criticism or having our flaws and failures pointed out us. Although this might be needed, Paul says to address the issue respectfully and with tact. Lastly, there is the idea of adding a bit of salt to the meal. Many of us can’t have too much salt with our food anymore, but I’m sure we all remember how great those boardwalk fries tasted when we could. The point of this statement is not to add or change the gospel message but to ask the hard questions and get folks to think. The salt is the idea that you put into the conversation to keep them engaged and coming back for the next piece. So today remember this, if you’re in a conversation and you start to wonder if this is someone to share your faith with; the answer is YES!
