“And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.” (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)
In our denomination we have the phrase, “To know God and make Him known.” Which is a straight to the point description of the Christian life. But sometimes we distort what it means to make God known. As an example, we may listen to different pastors and Christian speakers online and note the masterful way that they presented the gospel message. Then somehow convince ourselves that we could never approach the topic with that same level of completeness. Or listen to an argument for Christ from a truly charismatic Christian apologetics perspective. All the while thinking to yourself, “wow, I would never have been able to ramble of those verses like that on the spot.” The World Wide Web has opened the door to thousands of videos and online sermons – given by individuals who no doubt were given the spiritual gift of speaking. Although this content serves the great purpose of getting God’s word out into the world, it can also be intimidating as we tend to compare our own abilities to what we view. Here’s where Paul comes in with today’s verse. Making God known does not rely on our own “eloquence or human wisdom.” Paul states that he showed up with nothing more than the knowledge, hope and faith in the crucified and Risen Christ Jesus. It wasn’t his wisdom or persuasive speech, but God working in Him. So today, go out and make God known. God will do the talking, He just needs you to provide the voice.
