“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)
Science fiction fans can be just as fickle as sports fans when new shows are released. Some people just want to watch something futuristic without any concern of reality. These fans are okay with simply being entertained by the content and never see a reason to state the obvious of “that can’t happen.” I mean it is science fiction, so there shouldn’t ever be a main stream notion that it was true. Nevertheless, there are also the more “higher class” science fiction fans who feel the need to critique both the movie and the underlining science which serves as its premise. Last week I read a short article on a new science fiction series that revolved around an age old and very difficult problem in physics, along with the idea that “we’re not alone” in the universe. This seems like an overplayed theme but the series is actually quite good. (Clearly I’m not in the “high class” fan type) The point that I wanted to make was this; in the article, scientists and engineers were interviewed to understand the practicality of the science presented in the show. The main takeaway provided was that life on Earth is actually quite unique and uncommon. There are well over 100 factors to be considered when evaluating the possibility of life on a planet. And somehow our planet is perfectly suited. The article ended with a statement of how unlikely it would be that the Earth, moon, sun…all came together through a random process. This conclusion was so interesting to me because you never hear of actual scientists making these types of statements. Today’s verse acknowledges how much of what we believe is just foolishness to the world. But we know the true power of God as the creator of all life. This little article I read is a slight hint that the world may be figuring it out too.
